WHY & HOW

On Practice Considerations

The reason WHY we practice and the intent behind HOW we practice determine everything we do, and it affects the outcome of all of our actions.

In Martial Arts training, intent informs everything - from how we move and how are perceived, reflecting how we think, and how we feel.

In my youth, one of my three beloved mentors spent a significant amount of time training me to understand and control my "intent."

Once intent emerged, the mind followed, creating a split in my ability to exist present in the here and now.

This may sound like hocus pocus, but it has instant implications in Martial Arts and many other activities we engage in.

When intent emerges, the mind follows and the body shifts. This shift, if perceived by an opponent or partner, telegraphs almost immediately our physical, emotional, and mental coordinates.

In simpler words, we become "readable" by our partners or opponents, thus "open" or vulnerable.

If we think strategically, giving away our strategy by exposing our intent is not a great idea.

In the world of Martial Arts, Parenting, and even Business, there is an expression that calls for us to "hide our intentions" for the very same strategic reason.

But what if we turn this upside down and consider our intent to be a valuable feedback step within a more sophisticated conversation of mind and body?
