Happy New Year from Catrina and Bo 🎉
Every year, at the threshold between past and future, countless people issue personal goals for the incoming year. A step removed from wishful thinking, goal setting as the new year begins is rather a temporal rite of passage we grant ourselves; a way to leave the previous year behind and look into the future with a positive, constructive mental lens.
While goals are powerful ways to boost ourselves into action, they also are an intangible quantity, a concept yet to be laid out completely on the drawing board of our plans ahead. Goals by themselves are imaginary.
Alternatively, I feel that a different mental strategy serves us better, in a more direct and immediate way: commitment.
When we commit to something or someone, we perform an action in that very moment. We can either be committed or not. Commitment does not have an in-between state.
My goal might be to climb Mt. Everest, but when I commit to walking I'm actually walking while my Mt. Everest goal is only a mere mental billboard.
In a sense, reaching a goal is a sum of sequential commitments, but a goal is merely an immaterial abstract until it is actually reached. Commitments on the other hand, are quantifiable and concrete; leaving no room for wishful thinking.
We're either committed, or we're not. The proof is our actions, not our words or thoughts.
So, for 2025, when you feel tempted to set a goal, write it down and then take it apart into it's smaller parts and steps - the necessary commitments without which no forward steps are possible.
This process of analysis and organizing is what turns a goal into a powerful step by step actionable strategy.
Your goal might be be happier this year, but you may encounter a situation in your daily life that pushes you away from that goal. In that moment you have the choice to commit to your peace of mind and step outside of the conflict zone into a calmer state of mind; thus, closer to happiness.
Commit to your own health. Commit to your happiness. Commit to your inner peace.
Commit to your Self, because this process ensures that you invest your most valuable commodity - TIME - in a way that you can control and adapt while investing in yourself.
A commitment is an action, and action is power you hold and make use of... eventually taking you closer to your initial goals.
Break down your goals into actionable commitments, and just like a mosaic of mirrors you will discover that your goals are in fact contained within the smallest of commitments.
Focus on commitments.
Wishing you all a year full of wonder and discovery!
Happy New Year!
